Class Descriptions:
Hand Building (10 students per class):
Over the 10-week class, adults will learn techniques for throwing such forms as bowls, cups, vases, and others using the pottery wheel as a tool. Bring your own project ideas or follow along with a guided project led by your instructor.
- Classes for all experience levels, including no experience at all:
- Hand building with Hilde Schaaf (she/her): Mondays 12:30-3PM, 9/11-11/13 – all experience levels, including no experience at all. Students will follow along on guided projects at the start of each class to learn the foundational skills that you can then apply to your own project ideas. You will learn how to use the extruder and slab roller to create a variety of shapes and forms to use as building blocks for your creations. You will also learn a variety of hand building techniques including slab, coil, or pinching to create functional or sculptural pieces. This class will also include the option to learn how to use the potters wheel as a tool to finish hand built projects. Please note, this will NOT include traditional wheel throwing lessons.
- Sculpture with Sara Young (she/her): Sundays 10AM-12:30PM, 9/17-11/19 – all experience levels, including no experience at all. The class will focus more on the formal and conceptual elements of sculpture and less on the skill building, though slab, coiling, slump molds, pinch pots, and surface design will be thoroughly covered. Students will learn how to use the slab roller, extruder, and potters wheel if there is interest/experience. We will talk about luminaries, hanging sculpture on walls and from ceilings, as well as public/outdoor/garden art. We will talk about clay as a conceptual medium, as well as what makes a piece “work”. Bring any and all ideas you have to class, and be prepared to get messy.
