Pop-Up Pot* Sale & Happy Hour
L&L Libations has generously offered to host Burnish for a Pop-Up Pottery* sale and Happy Hour!
When: May 20, 3-5PM
Where: L&L Libations, 1107 N State St
What: We will be hanging out, slinging drinks and selling pots* to raise funding for the AtmosQueer Soda Firing and Studio Grant programs for Burnish Clay Studio. You can help support this event in several ways.
*when I say "pots" I mean all types of object made from clay, whether it is functional pottery or sculptural.
Why: Burnish Clay Studio is dedicated to creating a welcoming and inclusive community. We understand the barriers of entry to the arts and want encourage everyone to develop their creativity and skills. Some of those barriers are financial, and some of those barriers are tied other systems of white, patriarchal, hetero-normative oppression.
The primary focus of this fundraiser is to support the AtmosQueer soda firing we are hosting in June. This firing workshop will include only LGBTQIA2S+ participants, lead by Jordan Jones visiting us from Whidbey Island. While Jordan has extensive soda firing experience, since she has not fired our kiln before, she will be assisted by a strong ally to the LGBTQIA2S+ community - Ann Marie Cooper who has extensive experience with our kiln.
Our goal is to raise the funds needed to pay the firing leader / instructor for their labor and for the consumable materials used during the firing - gas, cones, soda, etc. For more information about the plans for the AtmosQueer firing, please click here.
The stretch goal is to raise enough funds to also go towards the Studio Grant program that provides discounts on class and membership fees for those from the BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA2S+ communities. I am happy to share that 12% of the students in the Spring 2023 classes received a Studio Grant covering a portion of their class fee on a self-selected sliding scale. It is wonderful that we are able to welcome so many more people from communities that are historically underrepresented in the arts, but we need to ensure the grant program is sustainable by seeking out additional funds to support it.
