Materials & Services
Burnish provides several options to help support artists with home studios or who have short term project needs. The two primary services are kiln rental and the sale of tools and materials. Other services may be available upon request - tell us what you need and we will see if we can accommodate you. However, we cannot provide hourly studio use - general access to the studio and equipment to practice or to make work must be through a class, workshop, or membership. Managing storage of works in progress and orientation/cleanliness of the studio makes general hourly studio rental unsupportable at this point in time.
Kiln Rental
BCS has 2 round electric kilns with automatic controllers as well as a gas Soft Brick Car Kiln for most of the studio firings and a gas Hard Brick kiln for Soda firing. Click here for more information about kiln rentals.
Tools and Materials
We are partnering with the Clay Art Center in Tacoma to provide local access to clay, tools, and other materials. We stock a number of items on-site including (but not limited to):
Raw glaze materials are available to purchase in the studio on a limited basis. Basically, if we are using it for our own studio slips and glazes we may be able to provide a small volume. Send us an email at [email protected] or call the studio to determine if we can provide the ingredient(s) you need.
Consolidated ordering services from Clay Art Center is also available for those that need specific items but want to avoid the traffic filled trip South. We typically receive a delivery every 6-8 weeks. CAC will deliver to your door directly if you need more than 1,000 pounds of clay, and for that you should contact them to order. If you need less than a half-ton, you are welcome to place the order through Burnish. Orders through Burnish can include anything CAC stocks down to a single specific tool, no minimums or maximums on material type or quantity. For more information or to place an order, email [email protected] with a list of items and quantities and we will provide a quote that includes the added fee for shipping & handling.

FAQ’s regarding the BCS Consolidated Ordering Program
- Q: Can I call CAC directly to place my order and pick it up from Burnish?
- A: No – in order to pick up a CAC order from Burnish you must place the order through Burnish.
- Q: Do you offer the same discount on clay for WCA members that CAC offers?
- A: Unfortunately we cannot offer the WCA Member Discount on clay orders. If that is critical to you, you are welcome to continue to purchase directly from CAC in Tacoma.
- Q: How much does consolidated ordering through BCS cost?
- A: The cost will be a little more than if you purchased the items directly from CAC because we need to factor in shipping and handling expenses. Being able to pick up your items from Burnish instead of driving 4+ hours round trip to Tacoma is a convenience for you, but there is a cost associated with that convenience. Like all businesses that offer services to their customers, it is one of the ways that we pay the rent here. You are welcome to continue to purchase directly from CAC or SPS – I won’t be offended…
- Q: Do you accept Resellers Certificates?
- A: Yes! Preferably attach an electronic copy of your certificate to the email you send when placing your order, but you can bring in a printed copy when you pick up your order if necessary. Since you are ordering from Burnish instead of CAC, I have to keep a copy on file here.
- Q: How quickly do I need to pick up my order?
- A: Within 2 weeks, especially if you are local. Orders left for longer than 2 weeks may begin to accrue a storage fee if arrangements are not made in advance for a longer duration.
