Hand Building (12 students per class):
Potter’s Wheel (13 students per class):
Over the 8-week class, students will learn techniques for throwing such forms as bowls, cups, vases, and others using the pottery wheel as a tool. Bring your own project ideas or follow along with a guided project led by your instructor.
- Hand Building with Sara Young (she/her) - Monday 07/08-08/26, 12:30 PM-3:00 PM: During this eight week class, students will create work every week based on the three ways to hand build a piece: Coil, Slab, and Pinch, in addition to the skill adjacent techniques including paddling, broom handle, extruding, and punching techniques. The students will also be taught how to build a surface on their pots by layering slips, underglazes, stains, glazes, decals, lusters, and overglazes. By the end of the class, each student will have at least 6 pieces to show for the work they did in the class. Advanced students will work with the instructor one-on-one to bring any ideas they have to life. Beginning students will cover the basics of handbuilding and will finish the class with a wide variety of skills.
Potter’s Wheel (13 students per class):

- Beginner Wheel: for those who are brand new to clay, or who are still really struggling with centering.

- Not a Beginner Wheel: Friday 07/12-08/30, 12:30 PM-3:00 PM with Sara Young (she/her)
- During this eight week class, the students will have a "skill drill" at the beginning of each of the first 6 classes designed to give them 2 hours of practice in 10-20 minutes. Each of the first six classes will also involve a class lesson that will include all of the basic shapes/types of functional pottery including: Cup, Mug, Vase, Bowl, Pitcher, Covered Jar, Plate. The instructor will cover the design of a pot and discuss each of the pots parts: foot, belly, shoulder, neck, and lip, as well as how to create a unified and well-designed functional piece. The students will be using cone 10 clay and will have the opportunity to be a test group for the cone 10 glazes Burnish Clay Studio is developing for the fall.
